Chapter Twenty-Four

Annie drew the black dress over her head, zipped it in the back, and stared at herself in the mirror. She liked to think the dull color didn’t make her look too washed out. Recently, in an effort to switch things up, she had dyed her hair bonfire red because the blond highlights no longer interested her. She wanted to go brighter and more flamboyant. If she could get it cut into a style, she might look more stylish. A new hair salon had opened in town, and she planned to check it out at some point.

Today was Frannie’s funeral, and everyone would gather down at the Wingston-Apple Funeral Home to pay his or her respects. Afterward, Marianne would have everyone over at her house to celebrate Frannie’s life. Annie didn’t like funerals. She’d attended her mom’s as a young girl, and that was more than enough.

Her phone buzzed, and she checked the screen. The text came in from Flynn. “I’ll be there shortly.”

Her heart stirred with love for him. He knew what a challenge it would be for her to attend the funeral, and he had harassed his boss to give him the time off. Stacy was right. Flynn was a wonderful man. If only she could be normal for him, to be someone he deserved.

Okay, Annie, don’t feel sorry for yourself. This is not the day.

Flynn arrived dressed in a black suit and looking as handsome as the first day she met him. Tiredness around his beautiful caramel eyes testified to his long hours at the firehouse. His clean-shaven jaw with the one dimple in his cheek and easy smile still did it for her. She tried to hide both the nerves and the attraction as he drew her close and kissed her lips.

“How are you holding up?” he asked.

“I’m fine. Did you turn in the toolbox?”

“I did.”

“What did Sergeant Lawson say?”

“Not much.” He opened the passenger door of his vehicle and held it while she climbed in. “He didn’t seem pleased that I had evidence at all, and he grilled me on what else he thought I might know.”

Flynn shut the door and walked around to climb behind the wheel. She noticed a bruise on his knuckle and hesitated before reaching over to brush fingertips across it. Flynn’s hands were the only ones she could touch somewhat freely.

“Did you hit him?”

“Of course not.” He chuckled. “The hazards of the job. I didn’t tell him much. I didn’t know anything other than what you told me. That is all you know, isn’t it, Annie? And you’re not investigating?”

“I’m minding my own business.”

He eyed her. “If you are, it would be the first time in your life.”

“How rude.” She offered him a smile of her own. “Besides, that scare at the junkyard set me straight. I’m not inclined to do anything other than work on my books at the moment and say good-bye to Frannie.”

“Yeah, I hear you.”

She didn’t tell him she’d called the casino, gotten the manager’s name, and faxed him the picture of Frannie.
